The chest wordmark is rendered in a pirate-style font that draws direct inspiration from Pittsburgh’s three “Sister Bridges” — the Allegheny, Roberto Clemente, and Andy Warhol bridges that span the Allegheny River and define the city’s skyline. Red accents cut through the black-and-gold base like something that doesn’t belong but absolutely does. And Jolly Roger elements — skull, crossbones, the whole mythology — show up throughout the design in a way that stops just short of costume and lands firmly in legitimate.

The red-on-black-and-gold colour story shouldn’t work as well as it does. Red isn’t in the Pirates’ traditional palette at all. But as an accent — sharp and deliberate — it gives the whole design an edge that the standard black-and-gold palette doesn’t have. Like they added a warning label to something that was already dangerous.
